Marist seeks first victory


WAIKOIKOI is unbeaten in the ILT Premier League heading into Saturday’s round six match against the winless Appleby.

Marist will also be looking for its first win when it takes on Old Boys at Miller St in Invercargill while Southland Boys’ High School will meet Metropolitan at the school.

There were three blowout wins in round five in the 50-over competition last weekend.

Metropolitan thrashed Appleby by 155 runs at Queens Park. The Metro Tigers set an imposing total of 264 for nine from its 50 overs. Six of Metro’s top seven batsmen scored more than 20 runs, openers Gayan Mendis (21) and Isaac Fleury (31) took the shine off the ball before Matt Baker scored an even 100 from 118 balls. Baker hit 12 boundaries, and had support from Jason Osborne (27), Matt Burgess (28) and Archie Armour (29*). Conner Hart took five wickets for Appleby but the Appleby batsmen could only get to 109 runs from 32 overs when stumps were pulled.

Waikoikoi crushed Marist by 10 wickets. Marist opening batsman Marty McKenzie top-scored with 25, the next highest total was extras (15), as the defending champions were rolled for just 76. Rhuebyn Prattley took three wickets for 20 runs, while Parth Nagpal took three wickets for 10 runs. Prattley then opened the batting for Waikoikoi with Kurt Thompson and the pair reached victory in the 12th over. Prattley scored 57 from 39 balls, while Thompson contributed 14.

Southland Boys’ High School had home ground advantage for its match but was dominated by Old Boys, which won by 152 runs.

Old Boys batted first and racked up 238 before being bowled out in 49 overs. Brendan Domigan scored 105 from 106 balls and Sam Nicholson scored 33. The high school bowlers Hunter Cairns and Jake Kura-Wharepouri claimed three wickets each. Five of the Boys’ High batsmen were then dismissed for a duck, including all top four batsman. Old Boys opening bowler Ryan Acland took three wickets for 10 runs off his seven overs.

It was a good day for the Old Boys club; its Royal Riders B team beat Blue Mountain by five wickets in the division one competition. Jagroop Kahlon and Gurpreet Singh both took three wickets each as they rolled the locals in Tapanui for 92. Kahlon was then unbeaten on 43 when their victory was secured.

In another division one match, Nathan Sutton continued his form with an unbeaten 74 to help Wyndale go past Appleby B’s total of 146.
