New distance event in Te Anau half marathon already sold out

Runners leave the start line of the 2020 Meridian Half Marathon held in Te Anau.

IT’S filling up for next month’s Meridian Hydro Half Marathon with the event’s 10km race already sold out.

Organiser Heather Sinclair said the interest in the event, which is on August 7 this year, has exceeded expectation with the half marathon numbers already up on last year’s registrations.

“The Meridian Hydro Half Marathon’s cap has also been raised from 300 to 500 so there are still a few spots left,” she said.

Fiordland Trails Trust event volunteer and communications director Sharon Salmons said the addition of the new 10km race, was an indication of how popular events like these were becoming.

“We have over 70 people on the waitlist for the 10km distance.”

The event attracted people from throughout New Zealand who came to enjoy the spectacular scenery on the part of the trail which followed the Waiau River and bordered Lake Te Anau, she said.

“This event raises much-needed funds for the Fiordland Trails Trust to maintain the Lake2Lake Trail and help build more trails, and it also brings a welcome influx of visitors to an area that has been through a difficult time.”

Entries for the zero-waste event were still open but selling fast, with half marathon registrations closing at midnight on August 6.

Both races will finish in Te Anau at Lions Park, by the waterfront.
