INVERCARGILL Old Boys will play in the grand finale of the ILT Southland Club Cricket 50-Over Premier League against Waikoikoi at Queens Park on Saturday.
Old Boys finished the round-robin competition in second place behind Waikoikoi, but after losing the automatic qualification match between the pair a fortnight ago, had to play Marist last Saturday.
Invercargill-Old Boys comfortably beat Marist by more than 103 runs. The game was played at Southland Boys’ High School and the morning rain reduced the match to a 46-over contest.
Old Boys batted first and got to 208-8. Amarpreet Singh top scored with 62, and good contributions were also made by Satwinder Singh (47) and Liam McWilliam (45).
McWilliam then did most of the damage with the ball, taking four wickets for 15 runs as Marist was rolled for 105. Shaun Fitzgibbon had been in excellent form for Marist but he never got going on Saturday.
Waikoikoi has been the dominant team all summer and will start firm favourites on Saturday. Southland batsmen Jared McKenzie and Hamish Cooke are key players, while Liam McFaul has scored four half centuries in 10 innings this season.
Cooke and McFaul have also had plenty of success with their bowling this summer, while Koi’s opening-bowler Kurt Thompson is the competition’s leading wicket taker with 23 wickets.
Old Boys batsmen Amarpreet Singh and Satwinder Singh will need to carry on their good form if they are to upset the country team. Cody McKenzie has also scored four half centuries in 10 innings for Old Boys this summer, at an average of 49.
Old Boys B team won the Division One Competition a fortnight ago after winning a thrilling final against Te Anau.
