INVERCARGILL pupil Ollie Patterson (10, pictured) is getting ready to take part in the first event of the Southland Orienteering Club’s Winter Dash series this weekend.
After been part of the club and events for several years, Ollie had a new challenge this time.
For the first time, he would be the one planning the course for the event at Donovan Park from 11.30am on Sunday.
Orienteering is a map-based sport which sees competitors aim to be the fastest around a marked course.
Southland Orienteering Club committee member Sally Duston said there would be one orienteering event every month for the next four months with different members designing the courses.
“Each [event will happen] at a different location around Invercargill and it is designed to encourage those new to orienteering, families or those with a little experience to have a go at simple courses.
“Everyone is welcome.”
A flat rate of $5 would be charged per map.
