THE south’s junior golfers have had a great week, with two key events on the calendar and some quality competition produced.

Nearly 100 players teed off for the Southland Secondary School Championships at Winton on Monday, on a brilliant day which resulted in some very good scores.

The gross overall winner was George Prendergast with a score of 73, and the nett winner was Ryan Frost with 63.

The Wakatipu team of Jan Ebbinge and Nico Cheifetz won the team event.

In the nine-hole ambrose, the Central Southland College team of Toby McGregor, Ben Bryan and Bryan Short won the boys section, and Brooke Fennelly, Maggie Manson and Rebekah Kalweit, also from Central Southland College, won the girls’ section.

Winton Golf Club also hosted the Southland Age Group championships on Sunday, and Wakatipu’s Jan Ebbinge was the overall winner with a fantastic 1 under par 71. Jan also won the U16 section.

Connor Fowle was the top U19 player, with a gross score of 80 and Kevin Bang took out the U13 section with 82.

WAIKAKA has retained the Gilmour Rosebowl after a challenge from Lumsden.

Individual results were: Lynne Hall beat Helen Boucher 8/6, Kate Cross beat Maree Melrose 4/2, Lois Byars beat Lois Mitchell 2up, Deryn Cullen beat Shelly Molison 1up and Dianne Cleland lost to Jody Drysdale on the 18th.

The next challenge will be from Winton.
