Southland Strokeplay Championships
INVERCARGILL Golf Club is set to host the south’s top golfers this weekend, as the Southland Strokeplay Championships tee off on Saturday.
Golfers from Southland, Otago and Canterbury would all line up for the 54-hole championship event which, alongside the Otago and Canterbury strokeplay championship events, forms part of the House of Travel Tour.
In the 2020 event, the titles eluded Southland golfers, with the men’s title going to Arrowtown’s Jack Turner and Russley Golf Club’s Maddie May winning the women’s title. Both 2020 winners are back to defend their titles, as well as runners-up Zach May and Sumin Kang.
There is no doubt locals would be doing their best to ensure the championships are won by Southlanders, though, and the likes of Matt Tautari, Liam Balneaves and Liam Hewitt for the men and Robyn Pullar for the ladies will be looking to score well.
The event tees off with 36 holes on Saturday and concludes with 18 holes on Sunday.
A 36-hole event for seniors (50+) was also being played over 18 holes both days.
The course was said to be in good condition, even with this week’s rain, and good scores were expected across the weekend.
Earlier this week there were good entries in the men’s 54-hole championship event, and it was hoped more entries would come in for the women’s championships and in the seniors (50+) 36-hole event.
Entries are still being taken across all events. Email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 03 213 1133.
THE Winton Mitre 10 Twilight Ambrose is a popular annual tournament which tees off at 2.30pm on January 29.
It’s open to teams of three and at least one person must be a golfer with a handicap.
Entries should be made to email@example.com by Monday, January 25, or you can enter on the day.
The Riverton Summer Ambrose was worth the trip to Riverton. With an 11.30am start on January 31, the event is a two-person ambrose open to men, women or mixed teams.
There were limited spots available, so get your entry in to Bill at firstname.lastname@example.org, and include your golf membership number.
