THE first round of the Mataura Licensing Trust Vice Presidents Pennants got under way at Invercargill Golf Club on Saturday.

Invercargill beat Winton 4-2 (Daniel O’Connor beat Ewan Clark 2up, Murray Paterson beat Jason Unahi 2up, Andrew Ward lost to Barry McAlister 3/2, Ian Taylor beat Dale Turnock 5/4, Chris McMillan beat Max Schuster 2up and Alex King lost to Dayle Kirby 2down).

Greenacres got the better of Queens Park X, with a 4-1 win (Brett Dobbie squared with Liam Hewitt, Chris Sherlock lost to Phil Van der lem, Basil McEwing beat Jeff Mowat, Gary Tucker beat Nathan Miller, Bill Irvine beat Darryl McLean and Geordie Gibson beat Mark Boniface).

And Mataura had a solid 5-1 win over Queens Park Y (Tyler McLean beat Tim Mackay 2/1, Rob Mainland beat Jason Milne 3/2, Rhuebyn Prattley beat Rodger Stewart 4/3, Adam Newton beat Rex McDonald, John Dickie lost to Arthur Kennar 6/5 and Jimmy Cowan beat Noel Hinton 4/3).

Gore had the bye.

The next round will be played on March 27.

Age Group Championships
THE 2021 Southland Age Group Golf Championships will swing into action at Winton Golf Club on Sunday.

The event will include an 18-hole strokeplay championship event, with under 19, under-16 and under-13 boys and girls age group divisions.

The day also doubles as a junior summer series event, with youngsters interested in taking on a non-championship 18 or nine holes encouraged to come along as well.

The Southland Secondary School Championships are also being played at Winton on
Monday.

With interest particularly high this year, it is expected to be a quality event, with 18 and nine-hole events on offer.
