One spot on offer in cricket finals

WITH two rounds of the Southland Club Cricket Premier League remaining there is just one finals spot available for either Appleby, Southland Boys’ High School (SBHS) or Marist to secure.

At Queens Park on Saturday, Old Boys beat SBHS on the main oval by seven wickets. Opening batsmen Shaun Clapperton (30) and Lachie Nimmo (51) got the school team off to a great start with a 90-run partnership. The rest of the team offered little; extras (34) and Nick Brown (11) were the only other double figure scores. SBHS was bowled out for 146 in the 45th over, most of the wickets were taken by Amapreet Singh, four for 16, and Sam Nicholson, five for 18.

Old Boys cruised past the total in 27 overs for the loss of just three wickets. Captain Liam McWilliam scored an unbeaten 52 and Brayden Thomas 37.

On field two, Metropolitan beat Appleby by two wickets. Appleby made a solid start with the bat and was 64-2 after 17 overs. Wickets then began to fall at regular intervals and the team was bowled out in the final over for 172. Appleby captain Jamie Clark (34) and Dhruval Aery (35) were the top scorers, while Daniel Mills had the best bowling figures for Metro with three wickets for 26 runs.

Gayan Mendis got the Metro run chase off to a flyer, with 46 runs from 32 balls. When Mendis and Jason Osborne (31) were dismissed in quick succession, it was left to Matt Burgess (47*) to nurse the team through to victory.

Marist was given a severe 10-wicket beating on its home pitch at Miller St by competition leader Waikoikoi. Marist was bowled out for 77 and the Koi openers took just eight overs to register victory.

The division one and two competitions have their last round robin games this Saturday before finals next weekend.

Central Western is top of the division one table and is up against the winless Appleby B team this Saturday. Central had a six-wicket win against Blue Mountain in Winton last weekend. Blueys were bowled out for 128; spin bowler Grant Kean took three wickets and Conner Wells another two. James Wadsworth (23) and Thomas Menlove (42*) then anchored the run-chase.

Saturday’s draw: ILT Premier League: Old Boys v Waikoikoi QP1, Metropolitan v Marist QP2, SBHS v Appleby. Division One: Wyndale v Old Boys B, Appleby v CW, Te Anau v Blue Mountain. Division Two: CW B v Marist B, Waikoikoi B v Riversdale, SBHS B v Albion, Metro B v Bye.
