THE Southland Rams battled to a 24-all draw in their South Island Rugby League championship game against the Aoraki Eels on Saturday.

Played on the Southland District Rugby League ground on Elles Rd, it took 33 minutes before the first points were scored – a try to Aoraki, which was converted.

The teams were locked at 6-all at half-time.

It was an evenly fought, hard and physical game throughout, and the teams were still deadlocked at the final whistle.

One of the Eels players, Leighton Veale, suffered a blow to his head during a tackle and was taken to hospital during the first half.

The Rams take on Tasman in Nelson next weekend while the Eels play the Otago Whalers in Timaru.

Southland Rams 24 (Joe Gillies, Ome Raimona, Dylan Lovett (2) tries, Tane Puki 4 conversions), Aoraki Eels 24 (Derryn Bolt (2), Tyrone Hill, Jarrod Carey tries, Nathan Robinson 4 conversions).
