THE Southland Rams rugby league side trounced the West Coast Chargers at the Southern Zone Rugby League South Island Championships in Timaru last weekend but was unable to get the same result against the Otago Whalers or Aoraki Eels.

The first game against Aoraki was a close call with the Rams only losing by four points, 20-24.

In its second game, the Southland team was able to annihilate the West Coast team, 44-0.

The resounding win against the Coasters gave the team confidence going in to the last game against the Otago Whalers; however, the experienced Otago team was too good for the Southlanders, taking the win 35-12.

Otago went on to win the tournament final against Aoraki, clinching the title and bragging rights with a 38-6 win.
