NINETEEN rowing teams took part in the 2017 Stabicraft Corporate Eights Rowing Challenge at the Waihopai Rowing Club on the Oreti River last Saturday.
A crowd of about 300 people showed up to support the rowers as they raced along a 500m stretch of the river.
Waihopai Rowing Club president Garry Froude said the event went smoothly with calm water despite cooler winds.
“Everyone had fun and there was a good bit of competition between the teams, especially in the A final because all the teams were strong, having each won that event in the last five years.”
The eights event had three divisions – A, B and C –with five teams racing in each.
The Decom Electrical team won the A final, the SBS Bank Oars team won the B final and the Agricentre South team won the C final. A quads sculling challenge, which included three races, was won by the Southern District Health Board Paddle Pops team.
Entry fees paid by the teams went towards the club’s ongoing equipment expenses. About $12,000 was raised, Mr Froude said.
