SOUTHLAND will be one of 16 teams which will compete at the South Island under-12 football tournament in Blenheim from October 12.
The Southland team would play against Marlborough, Otago Gold and Canterbury Gray.
Coach Dylan Meehan said the team would be ready for the tournament.
“There is still some building up to do, but we will be ready. It would be great for us to win the first game. To start with a win would be very important for the rest of the tournament,” he said.
To find out where the team was at and how ready it was for the Blenheim tournament, it hosted a tournament in Invercargill and played against teams from Otago at Alexandra.
Team manager Tim Page said the warm-up games allowed them to see what they needed to do if they were to be competitive against the other teams.
“After those games we could see that we need to work harder and that there are things we need to improve and now we are working on it,” he said.
The squad of 13 boys fund-raised to enable them to go to the tournament. They sold frozen croissants and cookies and with the help of sponsors raised the money needed.
