‘Sports taster’ for pupils

PUPILS from throughout Southland took part in a ‘‘sports taster’’ last Thursday at the ILT Stadium Southland.
Special Olympics New Zealand South Otago and Southland sports co-ordinator Michelle Greenwood said each term a different ‘‘sports taster’’ was organised so pupils with disabilities could try out a variety of sports.
‘‘In March it was athletics, this month was football. For term three it will be basketball and in the fourth term aquatics will feature.’’
About 60 pupils from nine schools from as far afield as Northern Southland College, Lumsden, Central Southland College, Winton, and Aparima College, Riverton, took part in the daylong event.
Each team played five-a-side on court, and a skills competition was also held for pupils in wheelchairs.
‘‘It has been wonderful to be gathering together again, and it is nice to see them all smiling and happy.’’
Greenwood said it was hoped some of the pupils might be inspired to take up a sport at a higher level, such as joining a club or Special Olympics.
