INVERCARGILL club St Mary’s will attempt to double up on its 2017 Southland netball dominance over the coming days.
Last year St Mary’s completed an impressive double when it won both the Southland-wide and Invercargill Centre competition titles.
The quest in 2018 remains the same as it eyes two finals over the next three days.
St Mary’s will take on Gore’s Ex-High in tonight’s Southland-wide Netball League final which starts at 8pm at ILT Stadium Southland.
The Jess Huia-coached team will then quickly prepare for the Invercargill Netball Centre final against Rata which will be played at ILT Stadium Southland at noon on Saturday.
The showdown against Rata will be a repeat of an intriguing Southland-wide semifinal showdown where St Mary’s snatched an unlikely victory after trailing Rata.
Rata looked to have control of the game, with significant scoring runs in the first and third quarters keeping them ahead.
St Marys rallied in the final quarter with three significant triple plays, to go even with three minutes to play. One possession ahead, St Marys wound down the clock for shooter Bay-leigh Johnson to slot a long-range bomb in the last five seconds and seal the 2017 finals rematch with Ex High from Gore.
