TENNIS clubs throughout Southland are holding a free open weekend this month and everyone is welcome beginners to those looking to reignite their tennis careers.
The national tennis event, now in its sixth year, was started to encourage more people to get involved with the sport.
Tennis Southland operations manager Jo Grimwood said players of all ages and abilities were encouraged to take part in the open weekend.
“Everyone is welcome, and clubs will have racquets available for those without them. The day is about having fun and trying something new and, for those who have previously played, it could be a way of getting back into the sport.”
Every club taking part would offer opportunities to have a go at tennis, with social games and free coaching tips and instruction on offer.
More than 200 tennis clubs throughout New Zealand were taking part in the Love Tennis event this year.
There would be hundreds of giveaways including sport and pizza vouchers at every club. A major prize draw would be held for an exclusive hospitality package to the Te Anau Tennis Invitation tournament this summer, including flights and accommodation.
Tennis NZ national co-ordinator Mel Jansen said tennis was a game for everyone, whether you were a current or returning player, or had never picked up a racquet before.
“All equipment is provided, friendly club members will be on hand to welcome you and the barbecue will be cranking event you don’t want to miss.”
Southland tennis clubs involved in the event include: Bayswater, Otautau, Otahuti, Citizens, Gore, Edendale, Tapanui, Waihopai, Dipton, Winton, Limehills, Riversdale and Te Anau.
