THE Southland club cricket 50-over premier league grand final is at Queens Park this Saturday.

Old Boys and Appleby have been the strongest teams throughout the summer and the 2021/22 champion will be a deserved one.

The semi-final between Waikoikoi and Metropolitan had initially been postponed after some of the Waikoikoi team was unavailable due to Covid-19. The game got under way at Hamilton Park in Gore on Saturday.

Waikoikoi batted first and set a respectable total of 256 for seven from its 50 overs. Opening batsmen Kurt Thompson anchored the innings with 73 runs, Welby Reed (45) combined with Thompson for a 93-run partnership for the third wicket. Angus Simmers finished the innings in style with 42 runs off 30 balls.

Metropolitan’s Keegan Russell had clean-bowled three of the top-order batsmen and finished with the figures of three wickets for 29 runs from his 10 overs.

Metro batsmen Jack Pyle (34) and Matt Burgess (32) combined for a 94-run partnership for the third wicket. Once those two batsmen fell in quick succession, it was left to one of the competition’s best players, Jason Osborne, to chase down the total; Osborne’s 91 runs off 74 balls included six sixes and six fours. Metropolitan went from being five down for 183 to being all out for 221.

Waikoikoi had won the match by 35 runs to qualify for the repechage final against Appleby at Queens Park on Sunday.

Waikoikoi did not play as well on Sunday and lost the match by 72 runs. Appleby had first turn at bat and struggled through the first 20 overs to be five wickets down for 84 runs.

Kieran Lloyd got the innings back on track but after he was dismissed for 75, three other Appleby batsmen quickly followed. Connor Hart (26) and Oscar Patterson (12) combined for 44 valuable runs for the 10th wicket.

Some wayward Koi bowling contributed 39 runs to Appleby’s total of 179.

The Waikoikoi batsmen also struggled to gain momentum against some accurate bowling and good fielding. Sam Downing again showed why he is one of Southland’s top bowlers with four wickets for 33 runs off his 10 overs. Jacob Downing cleaned up the tail with three wickets for four runs.

The Waikoikoi and Metropolitan B teams played their division two final on Saturday with Metro B winning by 33 runs.
