HAWAII’S Zane Schweitzer is The Ultimate Waterman for 2017, the second year in a row he has taken out the title.

Australian Jackson Maynard placed second and Caio Vaz, of Brazil, third.

Schweitzer attributed his success to a culmination of hard work and knowledge passed down from his parents and grandparents.

“I hope they are all so proud, because I’m proud and super-grateful to keep on carrying the torch. I’m going to hold it humbly and proudly,” he said.

He was one of eight of the world’s best watermen invited to compete in the annual multi-disciplined water-based competition held along the coastlines of Southland and Fiordland last week. They competed in eight disciplines over nine days – big wave paddle, waka ama, longboard, shortboard, stand-up paddle, stand-up endurance, underwater strength run and swim and prone paddleboarding.
