A GROUP of Southland sailors will cross the Cook Strait to be part of a national competition in “the big smoke”.

Sailors Daniel Blane, Darrel Parks, Geoff Gorrie and Grace Smith will team up with Bluff Yacht Club junior sailors Jordan Vermulen (15) and Sailor Hawkless (12) in Auckland to compete in the National Keel Boat Championships on October 3.

Gorrie said it was the first time in 30 years the club had entered a team.

“We’ve been part of local competitions within Southland and some of our sailors have competed in national events, but as individuals.

“It is the first time, in a long time, that we will compete as a team.”

Gorrie said they wanted to include the junior sailors in the team.

“It will give them experience, they are active members of our club and they deserve it.”

The team would be sailing a Farr MRX boat competing against 15 other teams from throughout the country.

“Everyone is really excited. There are some rockstar sailors in this competition so it will be great to be a part of it.”
