ABOUT 20 young riders from Canterbury south competed in the South Island Island Pony Club Dressage Championships in Gore last weekend.
Otago Southland Area Pony Club secretary Diane Bell said the first day was rough with the wind creating havoc in the arena, but the second day ran successfully.
“We’ve had an amazing local committee who has helped out with the event and have been an amazing support.”
Among the riders to compete at the championships was Kate Hamilton, of Winton, on horse Danny Devito. It was her third time competing at the champs.
She said Danny Devito was a kind and well-mannered team member on the field.
“He’s one of my favourite horses because he looks after me,” she said.
“If I muck up or something he just carries on.”
She said she felt privileged to be a part of this year’s event.
“We were only reserves but one of the senior team members had to pull out.
“So this was a pretty exciting opportunity for Danny and I.”
