ANIMAL lovers will be unable to visit their furry friends as the Invercargill SPCA closes its doors for the next three Saturdays.
Although open during normal weekday hours, the centre on Harewood Rd, Woodend, will be closed on August 17, 24, and 31.
SPCA communications manager Jessie Gilchrist said the decision to shut up shop was made to allow time to establish new processes ahead of what was expected to be a busy summer.
Due to last summer’s “kitten season” being particularly busy, the centre needed time to make changes to ensure a smooth operation, she said.
“The busiest time of year for SPCA is in the summer months when cats breed and thousands of kittens come into our care, so August is a good time to make changes to allow weekends to operate even better for the SPCA team and our community.”
The three weekends off would also give the new centre manager time to settle in, she said.
“The Invercargill centre is welcoming a new centre manager next Monday, who has moved from the United Kingdom to take up the role.
“Our team has been eagerly awaiting her arrival for a few months and in this time, an acting centre manager has been doing a great job in this role.”
Earlier this year, Saturday opening hours had been extended to allow families more time to visit and adopt a new family member, she said.
“It’s our hope that we can eventually extend our hours to also open Sundays.”
