SOUTHERN Harness Racing will pay tribute to horse racing commentator Dave McDonald during its meeting at Ascot Park Raceway tonight.

Southland Harness Racing publicity officer Lindsay Beer said McDonald, who “was an extremely popular race caller throughout the south for more than 40 years”, would mingle among the crowd at the Top Of The Park during the afternoon of racing before a presentation after race six.

McDonald, who celebrated 40 years of commentating in 2016, was recently laid off when the TAB cut more than 200 jobs.

The commentator received a Services To Sport Award at the Southland Sports Awards in 2016.

The racing event was a standard Southern Harness Racing race day at the Ascot Park Raceway in Invercargill.

The first race of 10 was timed for 12.24pm and “the public were welcome to come along and enjoy a day at the Top Of The Park”, Mr Beer said.

Admission was free.
